How to Share One Bathroom With 3+ Roommates

How to share one bathroom with multiple roommates without morning chaos — schedule, toiletry storage, and house rules that actually work in a real apartment.

You signed for a 3-bedroom with one bathroom because the rent looked great on paper. Then move-in week happened, you all had 9 a.m. starts, and three people were brushing teeth in the kitchen sink. Figuring out how to share one bathroom with multiple roommates is less about manners and more about logistics — and most of the friction is solvable in an afternoon.

The short version: assign morning slots, give everyone shelf space, and agree on what counts as a 911 situation. That handles 80% of the problem.

What’s the best way to set up a bathroom schedule with roommates?

Use 15-minute slots staggered by class or work start time. The roommate with the earliest commitment goes first, the latest goes last. Block out 45 minutes total in the morning (three people, 15 minutes each) and 30 minutes at night.

Write it on a sticky note on the bathroom door for the first two weeks. After that, your bodies will adjust and you won’t need it. The slot isn’t a rule, it’s a default — if someone doesn’t need theirs, the next person can grab it.

Two things to make non-negotiable: showers happen at night for at least one roommate, and nobody gets to use the bathroom for makeup, hair styling, or skincare during peak morning hours. Do that stuff in your bedroom with a mirror you bought for $14.

Where does everyone’s stuff go?

Give every roommate one shelf or one shower caddy that lives in their bedroom. The bathroom holds shared stuff (toilet paper, hand soap, the plunger) and personal items only during use. If you let everyone leave their full collection on the counter, you’ll lose every horizontal surface inside a week.

Cheap setup that solves this: three over-the-door shower caddies, one per person, hung on bedroom doors. Each person walks their caddy in and out. The bathroom resets between uses.

For shampoo and bigger shower products, mount three small wire baskets on the shower wall — one per person, labeled with washi tape. This single move ends the “did you use my conditioner” fights forever. If you want to go further on the borrowing problem, here’s how to deal with a roommate using your shampoo.

How do you handle bathroom cleaning when three people use it?

Rotate weekly. Each week one person does the full clean: toilet, sink, mirror, floor, takes out the bathroom trash. Next week it’s the next person. Three roommates means you each clean once every three weeks — that’s nothing.

Cleaning supplies live under the sink, paid for from a shared kitty (everyone throws in $5/month, you buy refills as needed). Don’t make one person be the supplies hero — that’s how resentment builds.

If two of you are anti-mess and one is fine living in chaos, the rotation still works because they’ll feel the social pressure when their week comes up and it’s their mess to clean.

What about emergencies and weird-time-of-day stuff?

Agree on a “knock once, walk in if no answer” rule for non-shower hours. If someone’s been in there 30+ minutes with no water running, they’re either in crisis or doomscrolling — either way, knock.

For sick days, food poisoning, or “I just need it for an hour” situations, the rule is: text the group chat, claim the bathroom, the other roommates use the nearest coffee shop or campus building. This isn’t a rule that comes up often, but the one time it does, you’ll be glad nobody had to negotiate it in the moment.

Last thing: keep a roll of toilet paper in each bedroom as backup. Sounds dramatic, but nobody wants to be the person yelling for help from the toilet.

How homies helps

homies lets you set a recurring chore rotation (bathroom cleaning, supply restocks, the works) and track who’s up next without anyone having to ask. Splits for shared bathroom supplies show up in the same place as your rent, so the $5/month kitty doesn’t get awkward.
